It "looks" like it should be ordinary mild steel. It's half of an engine container -- about 5' x 3', made of plate with lots of ribs welded onto it inside and out, and with rim about 2" wide on the edge with holes to bolt it to the other half. It seem strange that they would use some special grade of steel on that, unless maybe for corrosion resistance. Despite lots of paint scratched off of it, and having set out in the weather for years, it only has very light surface rust.

I wonder if it could be that rust-resistant alloy Cor-Ten alloy that they make shipping containers out of. I'm having a hard time finding any info about welding it, not that I have any choice other than a torch at this point, but according to one source it has copper and chromium in it. I can see the chromium making it brittle. In any case, I've never had a problem before with welding steel and having cracks extend into the unwelded portion. Something is very strange here.
