That bearing is subject to the most load when in 3rd. No load at all in 4th, light load in 2nd, almost nada in first. Hold it in second, see if it makes the same noise, only less so. Listen for it in first too, the lower the gear, the less load on that brg, but the higher speed differential between the shafts, so it ought to be hearabler in the other gears too, if you listen for it.

I wonder is a mis-alignment between tranny and engine could make it worse? Did you home brew adapters? crooked or off center?
