Chris suggested the black goo, Dave told you his negative experience. You went with it, had basically the same experience Dave Warned you against, and than you blast him when he said he warned you.
I did the urethane route, and yes, it is messy. It just takes some time and patience to clean it up, thats all. A bunch of solvent, a single edge razor blade, some more solvent, eventually it is clean.
