Remember, your dealing with a 59 year old truck. The absolute top of the list is all safety items such as, anything that controls steering, anything that controls brakes. These are items that can kill you. Remove the drag link, look for wear in the ball sockets, check the pitman arm ball for wear, same with the steering arm ball. Be prepared to get some drag link rebuild kits to rebuild the ball sockets.

Tear down the steering knuckles, with high confidence, you will find the lower bearing/race worn with the race like a washboard. While you have the knuckles torn down, carefully check the top and bottom trunion pin welds. One of our guys found a broken weld on a trunion pin.....that could ruin your day for good.

Check your steering box for excess play and also check the box to frame mount bolts for tightness.

If it were my truck, I would replace all brake lines with new steel. NEVER use copper tube, it will rupture. Check condition of shoes and all moving parts on the brake backing plate. Replace wheel cylinders if needed. Flush the old brake fluid and refill with new.

scroll down the albums to Steering Knuckles and double click.

Ah....the list could go on and on, but this gets you started. I am sure others will give more tips.

Congratulations on your first ride. It becomes habit forming.

Paul
