Yes, if they brought the field out separately, you'd have 4 wires and that would allow you to make it run in either direction. Most fan motors are hard-wired internally for one direction only. I'm thinking it would probably be series wound, so you'd use a meter to find out which pairs of wires are connected together, and then hook both pairs in series across 12 volts. If it spins the wrong way, swap the ends of one pair.
