Modifications to any vehicle should only be undertaken by those who understand what effect the modifications have on your vehicle.
The problems realized by the guys on that forum are as a result of guys that have no idea what changes they are making...installing electronic gadgets & then hooking up their trailer & putting their foot to the floor.
When you buy a Dodge/Ford/GM the trucks are idiot proof. They come with idiot lights & you can put your foot to the floor without fear of damaging the running gear. Once you add more fuel & air, a diesel will make a lot more heat & now, you really do need a brain to operate the vehicle. If you don't monitor EGT's & auto transmission temperature/pressure...bank on problems.
For a mechanically minded person...I wouldn't drive a stock Cummins...I find them to be a dog & they just have way too much potential to make driving them so much more enjoyable without spending much money.
But that said...if you just get in & hammer the pedal & don't like/need gauges...stick to the stock "idiot proof" configuration.
As you guys know, I've heavily modified every Cummins I've ever had & the only casualty I've ever suffered in many hundreds of thousands of miles traversing the continent was one blown head gasket & a blown up intercooler from running 70psi of boost :)
Neither left me stranded...neither was expensive to fix. In fact the Intercooler I had fixed at a rad shop in Fairfield during the 2006 rally & he charged a whopping $40 to fix it....& yes...both times I was driving like an "idiot" :)
