I know exactly what your talking about, I had the same concern....and found the answer.

I shoot PPG MP-170 Epoxy primer. It has to be top coated within a window of 72 hours or must be scuffed and more MP-170 shot.

I bought a Preval Spray Gun. Dirt cheap and the new power units from NAPA are around 7 bucks. Here is the link, My NAPA store carries the complete unit and the power units

And a little tip. I bought a box of 2 ounce paper cups. For real small jobs, I mix whatever paint in the paper cup, stick the Preval in the paper cup, shoot and toss the cup out. Saves cleaning the glass jar. For cleanup, put some lacquer thinner in a paper cup, shoot till the thinner is clear....thats it.

I have even shot some Base/Clear with the Preval on real smalll things and it works great.
