The levers have a bend in them normally at the base but do stick straight up. I don't think there is supposed to be much play in them, but mine (and I'm sure many others) had not only worn the bushings inside the levers but had worn the metal shaft they were mounted to.

The speedometer cable is a little tricky to get at since it's hidden behind the e-brake plate, but mine wasn't too bad to remove. Have to watch though. There's the cable and an adapter that screws into the case. The adapter came out with the cable when I removed mine. Didn't realize it was two pieces till I noticed the pictures of the replacement cables didn't look like the end of mine and looked at the parts drawings again.
