Yes, the stuff is very hard. Interesting about the interaxle application. I guess if the chain and sprocket were extremely coarse, dirt wouldn't be any more of a problem than on dozer tracks. I assume the trucks you remember didn't go any faster than dozer speeds.

There's a Canadian outfit that makes a 6 or 8 wheeled swamp/snow buggy called an "Argo" that has all of its axles (stub axles) connected together with chains inside the body tub. I took a test ride in one once and wasn't impressed with the chain mechanism -- very noisy and looked to be a maintenance headache since they needed to be lubed periodically and there wasn't any way to take up the slack as they wore. Plus, the machine bogged down in untracked snow.
