I have not seen any powder coating that can stand up to the marine environment where I live. A single break in the powdercoating and soon large areas are blistering up with rust undreneath. Powdercoating can look very nice but there does not seem to be the bonding to the metal that a proper epoxy primer and paint job has.
Powder coating melts a powdered plastic that is electrostatically attracted to the metal piece being coated. However the bonding to the metal is no where as strong as a good paint job.
Just me .02, and experience in the salty shoreline environment...
