All I can say is that simple math tells me that if everyone is required to pay for Health Insurance, then the costs are spread out, and my friend's breast cancer treatment cost is spread out over the most people possible. Isn't that the whole point of insurance?

I don't like being told I have to buy something, but I can't see another way to get the young and healthy to do their part to spread the costs. Plus a number of those running without insurance DO get sick, and then all of us with insurance end up paying higher premiums to cover their costs anyway.

Most states require car insurance, and while David recently found that there are people that do not follow the rules, it seems to work for the most part. Why are people up in arms about mandatory health insurance, but not mandatory car insurance?

It is just as much of a risk, someone without health insurance who shows up at the emergency room having a major heart attack can run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills quickly if they need major emergency surgery, etc. Most car accidents that my family and friends have been involved in were under $10,000 in damage, the great majority under $2,000. Just ask what you can get done at a hospital for $2,000 these days!

In the end though I hope we can find a way to help out the 46 million people that have no insurance, and the untold millons more who are so under insured they don't get any real help from their premiums.

Eric
