I really can't say but I wonder if the extra side gear clearance is much of a problem with the 4 spider gear dif. they would certainly have poor gear contact with the side gear but I would bet there is enough safety in the design, now with a lock right I believe the shims are essential. By the way Mark Y made me aware of the potential for the shim to disintegrate and he also sent me to bob stahl for the brass shims, you might give him a call.
