My rear axle had a pin that was sticking out of the end of the case that I believe holds a shaft for the spider gears in place. Mine was not broken off but was bent from hitting the bearing cap. It looks like yours is the pin that holds the cap on the end of the carrier but you might want to check the end of the carrier, I believe it is the end opposite the threaded end (the side the gear mounts on). I just looked on the VPW web site and in the front axle exploded picture Page 44 the pin I had fall out is labeled 3 and there are 3 of them.
