I wrote an article in PWA about making leather tranny covers 4 or so years ago.
You can have the man stain it any color you want, although black was traditional. Another color that would look good though is dark brown, or a medium brown to match upholstery, etc.
You can also dictate the thickness of the leather he uses. Leather is sold as "oz weight", which corresponds to the thickness of the hides. For a shifter cover you probably want something like 10-12 ounce leather at least, as thinner stuff would look cheezy IMHO.
