That was my friend's reasoning. The gasket, if necessary at all, will fill the gaps.
The main reason this housing was leaking is that someone used bolts that were too long, even tried to stack a couple washers under the head of the bolt. The bolts were hitting the block and not tightening. The gasket was shot, too.
