What you describe is a very common problem with the After Type transmission. The Up-To Type does not seem to have this problem due to a difference in design.
I have never looked into fixing the problem, but I know of people who have. Years ago I had a discussion with Michael Johnson (the Michael Johnson of photography fame and Carryall fame) about it. He tore apart several transmissions trying to get to the problem and fix it. Seems he told me that parts were no longer available and that he gave up and resigned himself to live with it.
I have never considered it to be a great problem although it is noisy and will certainly get the attention of someone who is a new passenger to the truck. I look at it as part of the personality of a truck with the After Type transmission.
