milling the head will reduce head height and increase compression. you have to determine how thick your head is first before you begin milling. used to be aluminum heads that had a shorter height. they were good for blowing head gaskets. a stock iron head is likely better to mill, but your performance gains will be modest unless a full upgrade of intake, exhaust, cam, springs carb etc are addressed. better to shoehorn a 251-265 in place of a 230 if you want flathead performance. it is a better motor for more rpms.
