The originals were pot metal. Mine started to crack when I took them off during the resto. If you found originals you might need to inspect closely for cracks, etc.
I ended up buying the ones from VPW like Jay mentioned. As he said they are strong and all but slightly rough(casting)finish. Might need body filler for a show truck.
