It seems like the summary is "keep at it". Fortunately the shaft is out of the axle housing so I'm not stuck with having to use a portable puller and I can take it to a big shop if need be. I like the idea of the hub puller that you can beat on with a hammer. I've had good luck on small things using a 3-jaw screw type puller, taking a strong pull on it, and then whacking the end of the puller screw with a hammer. I can't do that with a hydraulic puller so I can't get any "shock" into it. I may have to try to find one of those hub pullers, preferably one that's old and stout and can take some serious pounding (no Harbor Freight here).
