From the picture in that link you can see that you're not alone in how tough these are to remove. I think it's partly the force and partly the impact shock that helps break them loose.
I have one of these pullers for the Desoto that belonged to my Uncle. They can take some serious beating to break the hub loose.
Leaving the nut on the end of the shaft is vital, with all the force you're playing with they can go flying once they decide to come loose.
