I think you nailed it.
When I pulled the first head (passenger side), I realized quickly that although I had drained the radiator I hadnt drained the block. Antifreeze poured out and pretty much made a mess of things. I cleaned it up and drained the other side of the block before pulling that head. So, in the back of my mind when I started it up and saw the white smoke I was thinking about the antifreeze that got dumped, but it just didnt seem to be getting any better. After I made the post, I went back to the shop and started it back up. Much less smoke than before. I let it run for a bit and it seemsd to be lessening. Later I got the brakes bled out and took it for a spin. No shortage of hills around here and it seems to have cleared up.
