As Dave states, there is a whole lot to this story that the original writer doesn't include.
Argon by itself can be lethal, and high argon concentrations in a contained area will make you pretty damn sick real fast, symptoms you're circling the drain generally begin with a headache that feels like someone just landed an axe in your forehead.
Having done a bit of welding on freon containment vessels over the years,and getting hit with the "phosgene" a time or 2, unless this guy already has a compromized respiratory system my belief is he is full of fecal matter.
Having seen several production welding machine operators head off in the back of ambulances over the years, I'm very inclined to think the boy is smoking something and it ain't Lucky Strike. Them handrolled cigaretts combined with Argon can knock fools off their stools real quick.
