back before positive crank cave ventilation (pcv)valves the engines had a road draft pipe that pipe would draw off vapors that built up in the crank case espeacaily at road speeds the fumes would be drawn out of the crankcase and dispersed in the atmoshphere > When i but any thing with a engine the first thing i look at is the amount of "blow by" from the crank case a little oil fumes is nornmal > a higher amount blow by a mist and some smoke when the rings are starting to where this would included the COMPRESSION rings > when there is "smoke" there are issues alive and well in the mill >generally if there is blow by in the crank case there is usaully smoke in the exhaust i would be saying rings in this case a compression test is in order and if its a blow by past the rings compression would be low across the cylinders > valve and such have only one purpose to seal combustion in the cylinder if a vale leaks its generally in to the intake or exhaust not likely to the crank case > If the motor hasnt be run in a while pehaps the rings need to reseat themselves but i wouldnt bet the farm thats your problem ~ Copey post script if you pull the engine down and measure the cylinder diameter would most likely find the walls are tappered thats what causes rings to lose there tension the constant changing on the tapper causes the rings to not hold pressure and there will be a good ridge on the top of the cylinder > this was the problem in engines before dertergent maotor oil ~ J
