... I doubt the neoprene had been invented in 1961. What it appears to be is a special seal made for OEM use at Rockwell on this axle. It carries no part number on it at all, and is made of machined steel and rubber. This is not like any conventional oil seal. I should have been a bit more cautious before cold chisling them off.

My theory is that Rockwell later redesigned the axle hub slightly to use a conventional oil seal. This is why catalogs from later trucks show those for the W500. This truck also was unique in that it apparently came from the factory with a flathead 251 engine - I can tell from the front cross member which has the mounting holes for the cradle.

Fortunately, this lead seems like it will produce replacement seals, I am awaiting confirmation on Monday - will report.
