One measure of performance is the ease with which the vehicle can be used. Getting into taller trucks is much easier with a running board. My IHC B140 was pretty high off the ground. Pretty much impossible for me(5'8") to get up to the windshield and scrape it if there was much of a layer of frost on it without using something external to the truck to stand on. I did have a set of running borads from a B180. I did not run them but they would have made the windshield access an easy task. Likewise to access the front of the bed if not a stepside. Etc. Making the truck easier to use is a performance increase in that area.

Thus we are faced with trade-offs as usual.
