I had an uncle who suffered polio in his right arm as an infant. He lost complete use of that arm. Yet, when he grew up, he learned to shift gears in trucks, school buses, etc. with his right leg and foot. Later when he acquired a car that had "3 on the tree", he adapted a stick to the shift lever so that he could use his left arm and hand to shift gears.
