There is no oil to the head on a 230, only compressed air/fuel mix, so it would need a head gasket.
V8s do get oil. mostly up the push rods, but some have pressurized oil through the head. It's usually inboard though. But the valve area does get soaked in oil. If not a leaky rocker cover gasket, then it may be a crack into the valve area.
Either engine, you might try re-torquing the head bolts, cold. before tearing into it.
