Red at $2.20 is $2.33 with tax. Still cheaper than undyed, but not as much. I believe red is still "high sulfur", isn't it? That's another good reason to run it, and not highway diesel, in all the old rigs. I'm leery of how the multifuel engines will hold up with low-sulfur diesel I'm hoping the odd gallon of used motor oil, ATF, and the odd 5 or 10 gallons of dark brown antique furnace oil that I add will give it enough lubricity.

Want to see a real price drop, look at OSB. At the peak of the building boom 2 years ago, a sheet of 7/16 OSB was $18. I bought some a couple weeks ago for $5.20. That's the cheapest I've ever seen. 1/2" CDX is only a little over $10, which is so cheap I don't know why anybody would use OSB for anything good. Studs are about $2, still not quite as cheap as when they were still logging the old growth on the coast. Copper wire and pipe are starting to go back up, though -- $43 for a roll of 12/2 romex and $7 for a stick of 1/2" pipe, compared to $20 for the romex and $2.50 for the pipe for years before the latest run-up in metals prices. Still, that's better than $100/roll and $15/stick of 2 years ago. I'm reluctantly trying some PEX in a small project at my cabin now, mostly because they claim it won't break from freezing. If it survives out there, then maybe I'll start using it indoors in good buildings so I don't have to worry about it freezing if I turn the heat off in that area in the winter. I have my doubts about it lasting forever like copper, but I guess I shouldn't care since I'm unlikely to last forever either. Black poly pipe is sure expensive compared to a few years ago -- about 3 times what it was. I don't know why that should be unless it's just going along with gas prices.
