I have always heard that the main reason for any Woody type bodies was simply the cost of wood and fabrication was far less than the cost of steel at that particular time. I was born in 1942, and remember a few of the shortages of items, steel being one of them, copper being another, and probably many more.
It was a wonderful era of vehicle body construction. I regret ever selling my '51 Ford, but there were so many of them around in those days that the option of getting another was very solid. How times have changed.
