some getrags will live a long time some will not. I had a 1992 W/ getrag that my uncle bought new and it had close to 300k on it when I sold it and the trans was never touched except oil changes. One thing that helped that truck though is the fact that it never towed a trailer. It was used just to drive back and forth to work.

My 1993 blew the getrag and cracked the case at 117k, that truck towed a trailer and a heavy on at the very often.

There is a place in MT that makes a oil filter for those trucks. It bolts on the pto cover and has magnet in it and a small paper type filter. I have it on one of my trucks and you would be suprised at what it catchs.

On those truck I would look at the frame around the steering box to make sure that it is not cracked, or ever been welded on. Have someone start the truck and have the wheels block or something so it does not run you over, and have them turn the wheel back and forth while you look under the truck and where the steering box is bolt on. Make sure that the rivets are not loose or walking around in the frame in the front cross-member area right in fornt of the steering box.

I have had 5 of these 1991-1993 CTD trucks and three out of the five the frames where missed up. Two of them I was able to have fixed by a good welder and the 3rd I parted out becasue it ws so bad. The one I parted only had 112k on it but that truck was worked pretty hard to, might have had something to to with it.

Getrags don't use gear lube either like most trans do 80/90 is not to be used in them the oil gallys are to small and it will not get the lube it needs. They use from what the "Manaul" says 5/30 motor oil. I have always thought that that was WAY to thin for a trans. So I have and other I know have run a good 10/30 or 10/40 synthetic motor oil. I have not had any problems doing this.

Other then the frame area, and the other things you would look at when buying a used truck. (tires, brakes, body, ect) I would say that it sounds like a good buy.

They will run for ever if you take care of them like anything will I guess, But the 1st gen trucks seem to last a long long time. I think that they are the last of the good ones, just about everthing is rebuild able on them, and grease able to. Unlike the 1994 and newer rams. My 1993 you saw last summer now has over 425k and still going strong motor has never been touched but one injection pump at 315k and oil changes, and she still runs strong and uses no oil. That is the best one I have ever owned!!
