Heads have a port on top, right rear, lettered "heater" for one hose. Sounds like you have the end that bolts to the top of SOME water pumps. Another location is a 'tee' inserted into the lower hose. So, one end to head, other to the vicinity of the pump.

Some had a manual faucet in the head location. Get under the hood to turn the heater on or off.

Many heaters were dealer options, details probably varied by the individual mechanic.
