Axles in side gear sockets, side gears in the carrier, differential gears that mesh with two side gears, the 'axles' the diff gear pivot on, the ring-to-pinion clearnace, the five sets of tapered bearings, there are lots of places to have play. AND, the differential itself doubles the apparent play. AND, the way you are doing it, the play in the drive shaft/transfer case.

Wheels on the ground, truck chocked, parking brake off, transfer case in it's false neutral between high and low, try twisting the drive shaft. That play is 5.83 times the total play in the assembly. I don't know how much is too much, but 90° is not unusual. Anybody got a fresh axle to try it on, for comparison?
