I dont know why you are experiencing the problem with the steering box as you mention. It may be due to excessive wear in the box not allowing proper adjustment. Maybe some of the other guys have a better idea.
On your differential play question;
TM Manual 9-18088
Differential and Carrier Assembly (front and rear)
"Move drive gear while holding pinion stationary. Backlash is correct if not less than 0.005 inch or more than 0.010 inch"
