You know how Dodge was good at changing parts any time during the year or model run and, at times, seemed to just grab whatever parts happened to be on-hand to put on the Power-Wagons? The early '46 models are a good example of this with the left over WWII parts and brass castings that show up in random serial numbered trucks. The parts lists did not always do a good job of recording these irregularities.

I believe the truck that Neil had was a '48. With your's, and the one Matt has, maybe there was something going on during that time. Maybe Budd was unable to keep up with the demand for 6.5 lockrings and made due with 2-piece safety rings for a short time. Or, maybe Dodge had the idea to try different style of rings for a short time and abandoned the idea before changes made it into the parts lists.

Wheel and ring part numbers did change during this time period. But, as usual, the parts lists do not go into any detail as to why the numbers changed.

The 1948 list is not of much use for 1948 trucks as it was released in February of that year and does not even cover 1948 B1PW model trucks. It only lists and covers parts for the previous WDX model trucks. The next Power-Wagon specific parts list to be released was the B2PW, B1PW, WDX supplement released in October 1949. It does not list wheels or rings at all. The following Power-Wagon specific list was not released until July 1951. In this list, some of the wheel and ring part numbers have changed, but none of the new numbers show tagged as never having been listed in any previous parts lists, which leads one to believe they must have been previously been listed "somewhere" (if one were to trust Dodge to always stick the method that they normally used to indicate new number listings). But there were no other Power-Wagon specific parts lists or supplements between 1947 and 1951. This would seem to indicate that the "new" wheel parts numbers magically appearing in the 1951 list must have been first issued in a "2wd parts list" sometime before July of 1951.

My guess is that if one were up to a challenge, a search of 2wd Dodge Truck parts lists from that time period, and a comparison with the numbers found in the Power-Wagon specific lists, might shed some light on the subject.

T-roy, don't break those wheels down until I get out there! ;^)
