One end is: bumper, spring, cup, ball,cup,plug. This end has a shorter threaded end for the plug.

Other end order is cup, ball,cup, spring,bumper,plug. This end is longer past the ball.

The 'bumper' is a plunger or hat shaped part.

My guess is that you might be having probs because you are trying to assemble things cattywampus. Pushing on the plug while getting the threads started ought to do it.
