"maiden" voyage

Wednesday, the hottest day of the year so far (98), I drove the ffpw at high-noon to the landfill - 20 mile round trip. Been down most of winter for misc, including recored radiator - which was probably good idea. Planned for all kinds of contingencies (tools, tow-strap, extra coolant). Had wife follow just in case. Anyway, truck ran/performed flawlessly under those extreme conditions. Only snafu was I broke the carb-return string on restart at dump; after crawling around under the truck for several minutes, found it, stretched it, re-curled the end, hooked it back up, started again, and made my way home. Was harder on me than the truck. Driving in those condition reminded me that the excitement and anticipation of driving the old girl is sometimes diminished by the realities: blazing heat, hard-ride, tough-to-muscle, etc. But, as always, she was the "dump queen" and ran like a champ in what was another pretty good trip with an old, reliable friend. PS. Brother-in-law wanted to drive her today, so I reluctantly agreed. His first ffpw ride/drive. Felt horrible for him but tried not to show it (felt bad for the tranny too); couldn't double-clutch and never got her out of second gear (had him start in second) for his "short" drive around the local loop. Even so, he's hooked - a new convert, I'm sure.
