Open delta and or Wildcat transformer banks have pretty much been the norm for North American PoCos since the 1960s on small services for the reason you state, economy to the PoCo.

I've not had a problem with mine other than one suicidal squirrel who momentarily thought he understood insulators only to learn he didn't.

The only drawback comes if you have a lot of single phase 120 volt circuits. Since they cannot be on the wild leg you may need to install an additional pannel to accomodate that need.

In the end, watts are watts, and they don't much care what transformer configuration they come from.
