As mentioned, prep is the key to a good looking, long lasting powder coat job. I think a lot of the powder coat places skimp on prep to keep the price down for their customers.
When I was a dealer for lawn equipment, I went to a couple of factorys where lawn equipment is built. At one factory, they used a 7 step, (yes,7 steps),prep process before powder coat was applied. The finish on their mowers looked like new even after 5 or 6 years of heavy use.
Another brand I sold did only minor cleaning prep on their parts. The powder coat often began flaking off before we even sold the machines and their machines looked like garbage after just one or two years of use.
so, I think powder coating is great, but do not spare expense on the prep work.
The powder coat place I use has several prices depending on what type of prep work you want.
