Is it possible that the frames were assembled on a jig, just a few tacks to keep it together, then moved off the jig to be riveted elsewhere?

Lesser/no welds in periods of low production, when more time could be spent riveting in the jig?

Or, frames were made by an outside supplier, Different techniques in different plants? shifts? crews?

All conjecture on my part, to explain why welding is not specifically an early/late thing.

That said, both my 41 and 53 were welded on the top of the front xmember, dunno about rear of the 41, '53 is.
