Yes, it seems to be the "non-inflammable dry cleaning solvent" referred to in the old manuals. The trouble is you just can't get it these days. You also can't get perc (perchloroethane), and I haven't even seen trichloroethane (which we used to use to clean flux off of circuit boards) for years. That means we're stuck with the flammable solvents -- gasoline, acetone, MEK, or lacquer thinner, mostly, unless you want to pay an insane amount of money. Gasoline's the cheapest, and probably no more dangerous than those other solvents. I want to be working outdoors, alone, and a long way from anything flammable when I use gasoline as a cleaning solvent. Even so, I'm sure it'll bite me one of these days.
