First, for swapping considerations, it is a matter of great importance as to which series the engine is, assuming we're talking about the 3.7 liter turbo 4 cylinder Hercules, aka 2300T. If it's a series I, it will not be suitable for repowering an M37 for most people. If a series I, regard it as capable as a Cummins 4B, note the *non-turbo* Cummins 4B, despite the turbo on the herc series I. If it is series II, then it is similar in power to the Cummins 4BT. There are critical differences between series I and II that make all the difference in the world when it comes to making the power desired for an M37. The series I may be able to be turned up to series II power levels with an IP swap but it will not live long there.

If you have a pic or two, I can tell you what you likely have. You also can look at the passenger side of the block down behind the IP and read what's on the ID plate there, if the plate is there. One of mine has it, the other does not. It will not directly say I or II, but the HP rating stamped there will be a clue.

As of late, there are some of the early series I coming available used as take-outs from Ford/Grumman stepvans. I've not yet seen one of these take-outs be a series II.

Both of mine and all the other Ford stepvan take-outs have been equipped with an adapter on the rear to utilize Ford small-block pattern bellhousings. Mine came with 4-speed close-ratio Warner T19 transmissions but any manual trans made to bolt to the Ford smallblock pattern will easily replace the T19. I've got my eye out for a cheap M5R2 someday.

One of mine is currently bolted into a '68 CJ5 but is still a work in progress(slow progress...).

Incidentally, both of mine were made while Hercules was owned by White so the data plate on the one says White, not Hercules. I've taken to sometimes calling mine White-Hercules or W-H, to cover the fact that it is a Hercules design that was made by Hercules but while owned by White.

No offense meant toward rick below, but the MARS site has been under construction for years now. I called and talked to Paul Caudell at MARS a few years ago. An enthusiastic fellow but didn't sound like he/MARS was going to be much of a help for anything outside of sending in an engine for remanufacture. I also talked with Charles Talbert and was enlightened on some of the Hercules/M37 conversion process.
