I was crusing down the highway about 80-82 mph, in a 1966 Dodge Coronet. When I heard a poping sound like you said, and then it was followed by a sounds similar to a air compressor that is about to take a crap for the last time.
I pulled the car over opened the hood, saw that #8 plug wire was off laying in the inner fedner. I looked at the end of the plug wire and the ceramic part was still in the end of the plug wire, (glowing) and trying to spark, but the threaded part was still threaded into the head. This whole time the engine was running and it sounded like a air compressor that is about to take a crap for the last time.
I reached in and shut the car off, stuck my thumb out and got picked up by two drunk guys, (different story) who gave me a ride to town to get plugs but not back to the car. Had to find another ride, since I was not near home couldn't call someone I knew for help.
