Correct me if I'm wrong, but what makes it a "snatch" block rather than just an ordinary block, is that you can open up the side of it and put the cable on the sheave and then latch the side back down again. This is handy if you want to put the block in the middle of a cable that's already run out a long way, but it's necessary if you have a hook or shackle on the end of the cable that's too big to thread through the block without opening it.
