I have put both radial and nonradial 9.00-16s on tubeless rims, with short stem tubes (the only short valve stem tubes I could find for radials was a 7.50R16 tube). The rim in question was a 16X6 painted steel rim with an OEM looking stamped steel center. I just went outside and checked: Michelin 9.00R16 XLs and XZLs, and 11.00R16 XLs are all marked "tubeless", despite the very heavy thick bead referred to.
What you should NOT do is mount them on tubeless wheels without a tube. And I think the proper wheel width would be between 5.5 and 6.5" for split rims, and 6 and 7" for tubeless. 8" is probably too wide.
