I don't know if this will help but make sure you know what direction the distributor rotates (I don't). I had a similar problem on a car once that I'd tuned up many times before. But I'd forgotten that the distributor rotates counter-clockwise and I'd connected the plug wires to the distributor as if it rotated clockwise. The result was backfiring and no power.
