My advice re your 203: remove it, remove the front half, throw the rear half away, buy an adapter kit from Offroad Designs (check www.offroaddesigns.com), find a NP205 to marry it to. You will then have a 2:1 and 4:1 low range, very beneficial with your automatic if you do any major offroading, and you will have selective 4WD, and you will have removed the main source of difficulty with your NP203 which is of course the chain. If you can install freewheeling hubs on you non full floating front axle (what the heck, get a Dana 60 front axle from Boyce!!) you will probably improve fuel economy from 5-10%. You'll pay for the adapter in 350,000 miles.
I believe Offroad Designs can help you even if you have a divorced TC, and at least a few 71-77 F250s had divorced NP203s.
