I thought the main reason for going to paper filters on new equipment was that it
doesn't take as much attention to maintain it. The paper filter will filter until it
gets clogged and then the engine won't run, whereas the oil bath filter will filter
until the oil disappears or gets solidified with dirt and then then engine will breath
dirt. A paper filter is more "doofus proof". I like an oil bath filter on heavy equipment
because I don't have to spend $20 for a paper filter which may not even be available
years from now when an oil bath filter will be maintainable as long as there's oil, and
if I'm real cheap I can just put my used motor oil in it. I don't know about the percentage
figures, and I agree the oil bath filter requires a fast airflow in order to do a good job,
but I think that operator convenience was the main reason for doing away with them.
