Your problem is not unique. I can only speak for Indiana as I've never titled a car anywhere else. You can go one of two ways.

#1, there are several companies that will do titles by getting you one for another state which will then be transferable to your state. Make certain the vehicle is not stolen first though as you don't want to sink a lot of money into it just to make the original owner happy.

#2 If the car was originally from Indiana anyway, the BMV will do a title search if you have an old registration. In one case, I couldn't find an old registration but the license plate from 1968 was still on the car. It was not legible due to weathering, but a pencil rubbing got the number off it. I took this to the BMV and they found the title in about two weeks.

Since the original owner was deceased, I contacted his son who was executor and had the title reissued but with me as the lein holder. This way the title came to my house. I then had the executor sign it with a copy of his power of attorney and got the car into my name. The state likes this as it gets old titles out of the files and makes their work easier.
