Well, it appears that your serial number is pretty straight forward. It fits in with Zentmeyer's numbers for 1962, and the stock number is correct for an M37B1 with winch.
I just looked through several different books and I found pictures of at least three M37B1s with the handle on the hood. I'd say that the handle on the hood should stay!
