I did a Hercules and I'm very happy with it. I drive it 10 miles each way to work every day. Based on how my 48 Power Wagon with the stock motor drives, I don't think I'd be real anxious to do that with a stock M37. The Hercules has a very good power and torque output per lb of engine weight. Other good motors to consider are especially the Cummins 4 BT (the new available version is 130HP @ 2300, 122HP@2500, 327 ft-lb at 14-1900; 755 lbs (about 130 more than the Herc.). Also Perkins 1004T; but it has a 5" stroke = vibration. If you are interested in a small 6 the pickings are slim. The only appropriate 6s I know of are Landcruiser H series diesels: 4.2L, 102-165 HP @~3600, 178-270 ft-lbs; about 650-700 lbs. Very smooth and would barely fit lengthwise. Also a Landcruiser 5cyl 1PZ, nat. asp. only 115 HP, 170 ft-lbs, need to add aftermarket turbo. I know where to get LC motors if you're interested. There's of course the 6.2/6.5 GM engines but opinions of how "good" they are vary a lot. A 6.9/7.3 would be an interesting powerhouse. There's a few Detroit Diesel 3-53s around also. I thought all this through before I got a Hercules. I found another Hercules for $800 "out of a bread truck" so I know they're around used, I'm going to put it in the PW.
